Women face unique challenges and financial decisions throughout their lives, many of which will impact their ability to save adequately for the long-term and in particular, retirement.
Even today, women are still adversely impacted by the gender pay gap and are more likely to have to take career breaks to raise a family or look after elderly relatives. Some women in the so-called ‘sandwich generation’ where they are caring for elderly parents while still raising their children, often face a dilemma when it comes to moving wealth between generations.
But these are not the only hurdles women will face – throughout women’s lives, whether they have children or not, there are many obstacles that they will need to overcome. Added to this women’s longer life expectancy and subsequent longer retirements mean, that they are likely to need even more money later in life than men.
